Immigrant women and girls fleeing gender-based violence - such as female genital mutilation, torture, rape, honor crimes, trafficking, and domestic violence - are uniquely disadvantaged by cultural obstacles, lack of financial resources, limited English proficiency, and little knowledge of the U.S. legal system. Their cases are complicated and they often lack basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, and medical care. Tahirih provides free legal and social services so they can access justice.
Tahirih's leverages donated legal services to provide immigrant women fleeing violence access to the legal rights to which they are entitled under U.S. law. These donated services mean Tahirih is able to turn every $1 donated into $5 of lifesaving impact.
This project will train volunteer attorneys to lift women and their families from legal limbo, give women and girls sanctuary from violence, and help women and girls become a self-sufficient and contributing members of their communities. In the long-term, our public policy work, including our Forced Marriage Initiative, will promote long-lasting social change and a better world for women and children in need.
