Aleida is a courageous and gorgeous woman, who keeps smiling despite adversity.
At the young age of 17, Aleida lost her left leg below the knee due to a landmine accident. She was working as a cook with her mom for the fishing community. She went to pick up some coconuts for lunch and stepped on a landmine planted approximately 20 meters (66 feet) from the beach, at Bahia Solano (ranked as one of the top 100 world’s best beaches by CNN)
With the support of United for Colombia, and many generous people, Aleida was able to receive a state-of-the-art left leg prosthesis in 2009. Since then, she has been receiving yearly prosthetic adjustments and change of sockets to guarantee her mobility.
Aleida lives with her mother, sister and two children (7-year-old daughter and 3-year-old boy). She is currently working in a family home, is finishing high school (currently seventh grade), and enjoying her free time dancing and playing with her children.
