There is a vast gap in the number of children pass out from board examinations in 10th and 12th and number of children enrolled in degree courses or diploma courses. Poverty of collie labourer force the children to go for unskilled labour work rather than to continue education. Financial support to children of coolie labourers in Tiruchirapalli district, Tamil Nadu, to continue their higher studies will enhance their knowledge, skills and opportunities for better employment
Education is inevitable for children to develop knowledge, skills and attitude. As per Educational statistics at a glance, MoHRD, the enrollment in higher education in 2014-15 is only 25% whereas it is high at 97% in primary school. It reduces gradually when the child crosses upper primary and higher secondary. Children are the national asset of our country. If 75% of the children could not continue education which is an alarming fact which need to be addressed immediately.
Creating awareness and motivation among children from rural areas - Olaiyur village and urban areas - Gandhi Market, Trichy on various courses available for higher education, employment opportunities for different courses, significance of skilled labour will be provided. 50 children of daily wage earners / coolie labourers will be supported with INR 10,000/- to each child ($150) for continuing their studies. The scholarship will be provided to first generation graduates only.
One graduate generated by the project in one family will lead to improved socio, cultural and economic status for the entire family. The graduate will sensitise his family members, siblings and his generation to go for higher studies and acquire an academic / technical qualification for their livelihood. Only 2.3% of the workforce in India is skilled. This project is an effort to improve the skills of the adolescence and youth to gain skills and contribute to improvement in GDP of our country
