Dear Project of the Month Club,
It's that time again where we get to tell you about the impact of your generous donation to a high-performing project on GlobalGiving.
Last month, 148 of you gave a combined $4,685 to Empowering Guatemalan Youth To Promote Literacy. Here's what Kassia, the project leader, wanted to share with you about your gift:
"On behalf of Reading Village, I want to thank you for selecting our organization as your April 2013 Project of the Month. Your recognition and investment could not come at a better time! After six years in operation, Reading Village’s program is beginning to foster broad social transformation in rural Guatemala. In 2012, past and present scholars took the initiative to collaborate on small-scale development projects... including the opening of Concepcion’s very first library – a venture conceived of and implemented by program participants, the library stands as an emblem of our scholars’ newly discovered ability to organize local resources and individuals for social change.
"In this way, Reading Village has refined a model of change that starts with students and ripples out across entire communities. By investing in human capacity rather than in infrastructure, we are breaking the cycle of poverty and creating change from the inside out. Thank you for joining us in that effort!
"It is a testament to the local credibility and impact of our program that we have been invited to expand into neighboring communities. This June, Reading Village will begin selecting two new towns to work in, reaching 20 more scholars in 2014. At just $500 per scholarship, your gift will help reach half of those new students, empowering them with the education, leadership skills, and literacy promotion experience to transform the lives of thousands more children. Thank you for investing in global literacy!"
We're also pleased to share that this month, your donations will be pooled to benefit a project in Russia called, Help Children with Cancer Access Treatment. Former Soviet Union countries often lack adequate facilities, medications, and trained oncologists to serve children with cancer, and as a result, families have to travel abroad to nearby countries, such as Israel or Germany, to bring their children for treatment. As non-residents, they pay full costs of treatment, which is lengthy and very expensive. You'll be helping to support a family facing large out-of-pocket medical expenses to save their child.
Upon hearing that this project is May's Project of the Month, Sasha from Advita Fund said, "I was elated to find out we were chosen - It is an honor to be selected from a large pool of great projects. I am very happy and grateful for your generous support for our patients."
We look forward to providing you further updates about this project next month.
Thank you so much for your generosity. It makes us so proud to hear about the impact that your gifts are making - we hope you feel the same joy that we do when you read these updates from around the world.
Warmly, Mari and the GlobalGiving team
