The education sector faces great challenges, one of which is lack of funding and the high cost of schooling. The challenges go beyond just getting registered in a public school which is suppose to be free. However, parents bear the cost of equipping classrooms, books, stationary, uniforms, feeding and transportation, which places a huge burden on them due to the poverty situation in Nigeria. Some children drop out based on this and the harsh reality that they can also earn income for the family.
Project "No Excuses" is a 5-year holistic scholarship scheme, which covers the cost of educational, nutritional, health and social support for 30 vulnerable children between the ages of 6 to 18 years in public primary and secondary schools in Ogombo community in Eti-Osa local government, Lagos State. Scholarship recipients would have excelled in their studies but their families are unable to meet the economic demands of education. 30 vulnerable children will be taken off the streets of Lagos.
30 vulnerable children will be taken off the streets of Lagos and will have the opportunity of completing primary or secondary school education. Thus they will be literate with capacity to earn income and contribute to community development. This will reduce the area boy and girl syndrome which is common on the streets of Lagos. At least 30 families will benefit with the aim of extending to the entire community due to the high drop-out cases within the local government.
