The Kanker District is situated in the southern region of the state Chhattisgarh in India. The economy is agricultural with high levels of poverty. The Naxal movement is rampant in the district and children are often inducted into the Naxal movement. Considering the living conditions of the people, the Naxal offer is very tempting. The Nanhi Kali program gives these girls a chance to educate themselves and find a sustainable independent lifestyle on the right side of law.

This is the story of Divya Patel from the Murdhowa village of the Kanker District of Chhattisgarh, India. Her father --Radheshyam Patel is a farmer and works as a daily laborer and her mother, Sakun Bai Patel helps her husband in farming. Her father studied until the 10th class while the mother is illiterate. The parents want to educate their children despite facing severe financial crunches.

Divya is very regular in attending school, and is one of the best performing girls in her school. She attends the academic support center regularly. Her results prior to attending these classes were not so good. She became a Nanhi Kali in 2008-09. However, she showed a lot of enthusiasm in studies and overall improvement after becoming a Nanhi Kali. In the final exam for class I, she scored 47% marks, which she improved to 71% in class II and in Class III she got 66.33%. Further in class IV she got 82%, but her most significant achievement came in the form of class 5th annual result (2010-11) where she scored 96.6% marks.

Her father says, "I want Divya to become a Doctor. I thank the Nanhi Kali program for giving her this opportunity."

Just like Divya, 57 other Nanhi kalis have secured more than 90% in conflict afflicted areas of Chhattisgarh in the grade V board exam this year. It is with your extended support and enthusiasm for our project that Nanhi Kalis like Divya Patel have the opportunity to shine and build a future based on their aspirations. We are happy to inform you that our project of $7200 has been funded and we will be educating 100 underprivileged girl children just like Divya, who have finished class 5, or their primary education and are pursuing their secondary education. Moreover, the excess funds that we have raised with your support, will also go towards sponsoring the education of girl children from areas where the need is most!

We thank you for your generous support!
