United with family..a happy ending & new begining!

Saraswathi aged 18 years was brought to Freedom Foundation by her uncle & aunt on 27^th October 2001 at the age of 6. She was studying in 2^nd standard Telegu medium. After coming here, she joined Nursery (Tamil Medium) in St.Alphonsus School (as that was the only school that was accepting our children). And from her 8^th standard, she started with English Medium. But she was not able to manage and failed in 8^th standard. After this, she refused several times to go back to school and discontinued her studies.

Though she was interested in few extra curricular activities like drawing, mehandi, dance, etc. she was not consistent in anything she took up. After continuous counseling, she joined ‘Tailoring Course’ in Yuvaloka, she did the course for 2 years, awarded ‘Best Tailor’ Certificate and a tailoring machine for her own. After this course, she worked in a garment factory for six months where she stitched screens, bed sheet covers, etc. using a power machine. Further to improve her tailoring skills, she joined for a four months course in ‘Jyothi Social Work Centre’ and learnt specific stitching of designer blouses (with embroidery & perfect finishing), churidars, etc.

Meanwhile her family members (two families - her maternal uncle & her mother’s sister) were continuously counseled and motivated to take her back home. In the month of August 2014, her uncle and cousin brother came to FF to take her home. They were counseled and explained about all her medication, transfer of hospital for her treatment follow up, her skills & interest in tailoring and importance of self-sustaining & independent future for her.

Now she is staying with her grandma & uncle’s family in Amiayla village at Ananthpur district. Her uncle has given her a tailoring machine and she has started stitching work from home.

In conclusion we want to thank every donor who has given to this project via Global Giving. We request that those who have given may keep coming back so that they may remain invested in the work we do. Without such help it would be impossible for the Foundation to continue Changing Lives...Making A Difference!

All work & no play makes Jack a dull boy!

All FF kids...

All the kids have been eagerly looking forward to the completion of the academic year. It has been a hectic time for them with all their studies and additional tutions so that they may pass their final exams and be promoted to the next class. Particulary it has been a stressful time for 2 of our older boys Raju & rajesh who were sitting for their board exams. They have been studying very hard as they intend to continue their studies further. Come results days and both of them have passed...Rajesh secured 74% while Raju got 42%. We are also glad to say that most of the children passed however the not so encouraging news is that a few have been asked to discontinue for lack of apptitude.

Rajesh & Raju are determined to continue their Pre University education and it has been a hectic time scouting for admissions for them to junior colleges and after much ado we are pleased that both have secured seats.

Well enough of the serious stuff and lets get down to the fun...the fun, joy & elation that comes from knowing that no school for 45 days. This holiday season 12 children visited their extended families for various durations from a week to a fortnight. The remaining kids have also been in constant touch with a stream of corporate volunteers who have gone out of the way to make their holiday memorable. On return of all kids from their homes the entire group has had a day out at Water World and were also able to catch up for a movie. Apart for this all the kids attended a Hole in the Wall camp...this was started by the legendary actor paul Newman. This was a time for them to socialize with other kids and also get down to some serious business of dealing with various facts of their illness.

Overall they have enjoyed themselves and as the saying goes...all good things come to an end...they are back to school for another long grind.

A story of success... a union in store!

Suresh was brought to Freedom Foundation when he was 11 years old and today he is 23 and on the verge of completing his Bachelors of Commerce degree this August.

His parents died due to AIDS and left behind their 4 children (2 boys & 2 girls) to the care of their uncle. Apart from AIDS Suresh's father was a chronic alcoholic who abused both his wife and children. Unfortunately only Suresh was infected with HIV and this resulted in the brutal seperation from his siblings. His uncle was the one who admitted him to the Foundation. At that time we tried very hard to convince him not to take this extreme step of separating him form his brothers & sisters however he was very resolute in his desicion.

After coming to the Foundation he was put back to school and briefly listed below are some of his successes & progress:
He was halfway through his 3rd standard in Lawrence English Medium School when brought to the Foundation in 2001.
After coming to the Foundation he was put back in the 3rd standard in St. Alphonso School in Tamil medium.
From the 8th standard onwards he switched to the English medium section.
In 2008-2009he secured 65% in his SSLC with first class.
In 2009-2010 he joined Indian Academy College for his PUC with Computer, Economics, Business & Accounts being his main subjects. In his final year in 2010-2011 he passed with 74%.
From 2011 he continued for his B'Com in the same college. His 6th and final semester is underway and he will pass out this August.

Some of his hobbies & likes are as follows:

Playing cricket & badminton, reading books & computer games. His favourite dish is mutton biriyani, loves the color red and is very particular about dressing in formals.

After completing his degree this August he is planning to take up a paying job while continuing his education through correspondence. He also plans to rent a house and stay with his brothers & sisters all of whom are studying and living in different hostels.

His dream of being united with his siblings is about to come true!
