Summary

Every day in Sylhet Bangladesh 3000 young children go to work in jobs that are dangerous. They work for long hours on no or low pay; illness and accidents are frequent. They are deprived of any kind of education. UKBET changes all of this by engaging families and employers in bringing education to children through our Centers for Working Children. We want to expand the Program through opening additional 2 local Centers, radically transforming the life chances for 100 children and their families.

Challenge

Prevalence of Child Labor is a common phenomenon in the least developed and developing countries and Bangladesh is no exception. Despite the employment of children in hazardous jobs being against the law it is nevertheless commonplace. Instead of going to school to learn and enjoy their childhood, poverty compels children as young as 8 to work in jobs that put their lives at risk. These are the forgotten children that no one wants to talk about, a group not touched by other NGOs.

Solution

The project's approach is holistic. We persuade employers to release children from work to attend an "UKBET Center for Working Children". Here children are taught basic education and survival skills and can progress into vocational training and non-hazardous occupations. We provide their employers with health and safety training and at the same time confront and discourage their future employment of children. We attack the root causes of poverty by helping parents find alternative income sources

Long-Term Impact

This project will transform the lives of 100 children engaged in hazardous works and their families. UKBET has developed this approach over the past 5 years and we have the evidence that it works. Children leave hazardous work, gain literacy and numeracy skills and go back to school or vocational training. Siblings no longer follow older brothers into work. Ultimately it will change the culture of employing children and reduce if not eliminate the number of children engaged in hazardous works.
