Challenge

Low productivity in cacao plantations in the basins of the Huayabamba and Bajo Huallaga rivers are not generating profitable income to the farmers, members of local cooperatives, deteriorating their livelihoods and life standards, making them turn back to planting and producing coca leaf for the production of illegal substances.

Solution

The project intends to use processes of productive rejuvenation and modifying of low-productivity cacao plants though vegetative propagation techniques, such as grafting and budding, in farms where the yields are 50 to 60% of their potential outcome to increase the remaining percentage to reach the regional average of 920 Kg/HA; in addition, the project intends to improve the access to specialty and niche markets that allow commercialization of cacao at better prices.

Long-Term Impact

As the proposed project is intended for long-term goals, it is a priority to make it sustainable without DIV support. Operationally and financially, we propose a hybrid alternative to get support and achieve the objectives. Initially, we intend to start a process to obtain resources from the regional government of San Martin and the Peruvian national government. It is one of our goals to get these governments to focus a portion of their participatory resources on and prioritising on productivity
