Empower Marginalized Communities Of Pakistan Sindh

by Primary Education Project

In Sindh, majority of the poorest are the marginalized minority groups living in rural areas. The Primary Education Project targets these communities and seeks to empower and strengthen them by providing sustainable quality education through building effective schools. Through our UNIQUE teaching methodologies we are helping the communities and children in rural Sindh to become self reliant and purposeful members of the society.

Almost half of the children in Sindh are not in the classroom;only 35% of girls are.Only 58% of males in Sindh are literate;only 23% of females are.Rural areas suffer greatly due to a lack of accessibility to quality schools.Girls are the last to have this opportunity due to cultural traditions.Religious tensions also prohibit many minorities from receiving an education. It is only through peace and gender equality education that these communities are able to be reconciled and empowered.

PEP focuses on female and minority enrollment to serve this neglected population by providing schools in their own villages with baselines for girls' enrollment. Our teaching methodology focuses on building confidence (through role plays and public speaking), teaching English (which gives minority groups the status they lack for job opportunities), and enabling families to be change agents in their communities (through Savings' Groups, Community Boards, and School Management Committees).

Long-Term Impact

PEP is currently working in 79 villages with 104 teachers. We are teaching almost 4,713 children and indirectly benefiting over 33,754 people in Sindh. Sustainability of schools is one of the priorities of PEP and many efforts have been made to ensure the long-term establishment of our schools. Communities are seeing changes through their access to clean water, greater sanitation, and electricity because of the empowerment of Community Citizen Boards and PEP efforts to strengthen confidence.
