Challenge

The people of the communities identified these needs as their priorities. Their children are losing too many school days due to sicknesses from water and time spent carrying water, and also losing not only health but also education and ability to work. Girls and women are abused during water fetching. Schools have poor sanitary facilities for women. 80% of all diseases in project communities are environmental and related to water and sanitation with poor water governance and knowledge.

Solution

The project main focus is to change hygiene behaviors of pupils and construct demonstration rainwater harvesting and sanitation facilities in six of the schools in project communities. The project will use innovations such as creating comics and leveraging the existing student health clubs as forums to teach proper water use, hygiene and sanitation practices in an appealing way. Children as the carriers of hygiene and health messages will improve the health of their families and communities.

Long-Term Impact

1. Improved knowledge and behavior about hygiene and environmental sanitation in the schools and households (pupils, parents and teachers); 2. Improved access to water supply and pilot ecological sanitation in six selected schools in Kabala, Koinadugu District, Northern Province of Sierra Leone; 3. Increased capacity of the School Management Committees, Local Government Agencies and other stakeholders to manage, maintain and scale up this model in the district and beyond;
