Children are missing many school days due to Diarrhea, Giardia and Cryptosporidium, Dysentery, Salmonella, Typhoid fever, Cholera and Hepatitis, etc from water and time spent in carrying water, and ability to work. Girls and women suffers and abused during water fetching. 80% of all diseases in the new district schools and communities are environmental and related to water and sanitation, due to poor water and sanitation facilities costing them enough spending whist affecting their livelihoods.
The project main focus is to change hygiene behaviors of pupils, repair and drill wells, construct rainwater harvesting and sanitation facilities in needy poor schools. The project will use innovations such as creating comics, established student health clubs as forums to teach proper water use, hygiene and sanitation practices in a friendly way. Children as the carriers of hygiene and health messages and provision of health facilities will improve the health of their families and communities.
1. Improved knowledge and behavior about hygiene and environmental sanitation in the schools and households (pupils, parents and teachers); 2. Improved access to water supply and ecological sanitation in needy impoverished selected schools in new districts identified in rural Sierra Leone; 3. Increased capacity of the School Management Committees, Local communities and other stakeholders to manage, maintain and scale up this model in the district and beyond.
