Challenge

Hydrocephalus is the abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the cavities of the brain. This may cause increased intracranial pressure inside the skull and progressive enlargement of the head, convulsion, blindness and mental disability. Hydrocephalus is one of the most disabling disorders recognized by WHO as frequently preventable. While high-income countries had a lower hydrocephalus incidence, Nicaragua is one of the countries in the world where prevalence is higher.

Solution

We will take several actions to prevent hydrocephalus in Guatemala: - Training future mothers on risk factors for hydrocephalus. - Vaccinating girls and young women against infectious diseases causing hydrocephalus. - Doing intrauterine screening of hydrocephalus in fetuses using doppler. - Doing early diagnosis of hydrocephalus in newborns.

Long-Term Impact

The potential long-term impact of this campaign is huge. First, we will prevent hydrocephalus in number of cases, leading to decrease of incidence. This will represent a enormous impact on health and quality of life of the population. Then, we will also screen and diagnose hydrocephalus at very early stages, opening the door to early treatment that will reduce the risk of complications and will decrease disability.
