Thank you for your generous support extended to our project in preventing Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) blindness in China. With your kind support, we are able to improve the blindness situation in China and restore sight for more visually impaired in dire need like Geng.
Geng is a 62 ordinary rural woman with a family of seven, who lives in Jingtou village, Wei County, Hebei province. A few years ago, she felt her eyes were blurred but didn't go for a check-up in time because of the inconvenient travelling to the hospital. Until later, Geng’s sight of both eyes became worse, so her daughter took her to the Wei County Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Hospital, one of the partner county hospitals of the Orbis Steer-DR project. It was found that she had Diabetic Retinopathy. Having her eyes checked for the first time, Geng’s eyesight was less than 0.1 in both eyes.
She went to Wei County TCM Hospital three or four times in the hope of appropriate treatment. Fortunately, after the doctor taught her about DR knowledge, she began to actively control her blood sugar which slowed down the progression of her DR before receiving treatment. After examination, she was found having high myopia. Doctors carefully diagnosed her and conducted surgical treatment for her, the treatment outcome was very good and Geng's situation was finally relieved.
Orbis’s work really makes a difference in the local community. Dr. Wang, Geng’s attending doctor said, "three years ago when Orbis’s DR project hasn't started in our hospital, we uncovered a lot of DR patients during screening. However, we didn’t have the capacity to treat DR patent, the only thing we could do is to refer patients to the provincial-level hospitals. Thankfully, after the launch of the project, we now have three doctors in our hospital who are able to carry out DR treatment and their clinical ability is becoming increasingly mature. Many thanks to Orbis and all supporters for bringing this project to our county, this would enhance our service ability to our local patients."
Your gift of sight means so much in the sight-saving journey of Geng, we sincerely invite your continuous support to transform more lives of visually impaired patients!
