We aim to give underprivileged residents (teenage mothers and refugees) of The Hague a home, giving them the opportunity to participate in society again. We offer our volunteers the chance to contribute to the quality of life of fellow citizens. As a side effect, we offer the children of the target group a clean and safe environment and create understanding between different groups in society. At the end of every project there is a tangible result: a home.
These teenage moms and refugees do not have a social network nor financial resources and often suffer from mental health issues. When they finish their reintegration trajectory with the Salvation Army they get appointed social housing. Within 2 weeks they have to refurbish, upholster, furnish and move into the house with their child(ren). On their own, this often results in poignant living situations. We support them in making that house ready to live in and more importantly: feel like a home.
With the help of volunteers we make sure the aid recipients will get the new start they so desperately need. Creating a mood board to visualize their new house makes them feel a sense of ownership over their home. They can then take control over their future by working together with volunteers to fulfil that wish. By supporting a vulnerable person in their development towards independence we aid full participation in society.
The diversity of clients that we receive from various care providers makes our volunteers more understanding and creates awareness among people from different backgrounds in The Hague. Whenever we can we will use second hand material for a more sustainable future. With the structural change that we are initiating, we hope to have a wider reach than just the family in the new home: a movement in which it is natural to look after one another.
