The project will support pupils aged no more than 20 years at Kazomba and Luwerezi primary schools in Malawi. 150 pupils will be supported to grow 5 fruit fruit trees in their home back yard garden. They will also be supported to own 5 chickens. Chickens will enable them to produce manure for the 5 fruit trees, eggs and meet for dairy household nutritious food and for sell to increase dairy household income.
Imagine a world where you have to get up at 4am to walk for two hours in the dark to fetch water. This remains true in Malawi, where it is said that the Millennium Development Goals have been met. Malawi and specifically the Northern Region remains a mostly agricultural and very rural country. Hence, many households rely on agricultural activities, mostly as smallholder farmers. COIDA want to educate children from tender age. Fruit tree and chickens will be used for message delivery.
COIDA will support children with fruit trees and Chickens to provide manure as a means of supporting them with long term and short term mechanism of eradicating environmental degradation and economic empowerment of girl child. This will directly improve soil fertility by increasing biological nitrogen fixation in the earth, boost agroecosystem functions by promoting greater water infiltration, and increase biodiversity by providing shade and attracting forest-dependent species and organisms.
The project will provide 750 fruit trees and 750 chickens to 150 girl children allowing them to access fruits, manure, eggs and meat for their health and well being as one way of reducing environmental degradation in Mzimba District by June 2020.
