Project #24848

Plant 1000 trees in Miyako in 2017 for fishery

by Environmental Relations

This project will help planting 1000 broadleaf seedlings in Miyako city and conserving them for 10 years. In Miyako, fishery is a major industry and the tsunami destroyed fish markets, fishery-related factories, as well as housing. Preserving a good fishing ground will support people working in the fishing industry. And a good fishing ground needs nutritious water flown from rivers originated from rich forests.

We chose a huge stock farm abandoned decades ago as afforesting site. If this stock farm is left abandoned, it will be not able to transition to the forest by nature power because it was totally cut leaf mold from the ground surface and is located in the cold highland. Actually, Miyako local government had been planning to afforest there, however, they had no choice but to give up the plan due to Tohoku earthquake in 2011. There were so many much more important policies to carry out urgently.

This project has been operated through "Present Tree" project since 2012 in cooperation with Miyako local government and local professional foresters. If we can plant 1000 seedlings in 2017 we will finish afforesting almost whole area, about 15ha. Miyako city appreciated and started this project because they would be able to grow forests by donation from people and companies praying Miyako's revival and the seedlings should be conserved by professionals for 10 years after planting.

Long-Term Impact

Hei River, which originates near the afforesting site, flows into Miyako bay, a good fishing area. If we plant broadleaf trees there and grow forests, it will store water under the ground and water originated in the forest will be not only pure but contain a lot of nutrient, which is necessary for planktons. Therefore, planting trees and growing forests will support Miyako's future in the fishery industry.
