The team is going to San Diego in 7-11 of July to participate in the ESRI Education GIS conference to learn about the latest advances in GIS. Our participation to this event will enable us to incorporate GIS technology into our programs and ensure that our youth participants receive training in the most innovative and high-quality digital learning opportunities. This conference provides hands-on Esri software training, nearly 100 user presentations that share best practices, and opportunities for Dounia Project staff to have specific technical questions answered by Esri staff. In addition, the conference offers vendor displays showcasing teaching materials and other educational resources, along with special interest group meetings that will connect us with leading educators and professionals from around the world.
The reason we are so interested in this technology is because we would like to integrate it into our curriculum. By making digital mapping a major component of our curriculum, we are planning on implementing a collaborative digital mapping project between two countries. We are interested in starting the project in two schools in New York and Casablanca. The idea would be to brainstorm global and local issues and choose on that participants would like to focus on. They would use GIS technology to map and report on the issue in their communities and how they would address it. They would come up with concrete solutions using the data gathered during the assessment process and multimedia pieces that they would develop throughout the program.
Stay tuned for new updates in the summer!
