The “Hope for Somalia” project continues to be the only educational services for students in Lanmadow, a remote village in the central Somalia province. There are 135 students who are receiving basic elementary education sponsored by this project. The schools consist of four classes from first through fourth grade. There are four teachers and five volunteers in the school to manage the school operation.
We have been active in engaging local philanthropists and the business community in Puntland region. Almost all the school expenses are covered through fundraising from the local community, business owners, and support from Diaspora. UNICEF has also been very supportive in providing technical and training programs for the teachers and volunteers.
The Hope for Somalia project will continue to support these children, from poor and uneducated parents. A UNICEF report on Somali children indicates that only 33% of school-age children in Somalia attend schools and the number of girls is far less than boys. The emphasis of the campaign is to give educational opportunity for the children in remote villages, particularly girls who have been left out when it comes to educating children.
With support of Somalian Diaspora in the USA and local philanthropy, we hope the project will continue.
