PeacePlayers International - South Africa (PPI-SA) is a youth education through sports programme that uses basketball and life skills interventions as vehicles to unite, educate and inspire youth from underprivileged communities. Founded in 2001 on the premise that “children who learn to play together, can learn to live together,” the organization currently reaches 1,000 children annually through its Primary School and Leadership Development Programmes. PPI-SA offers an innovative Life Skills curriculum focused on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention for its participants, developed in conjunction with the Centre for Support for Peer Education (CSPE), a program of Harvard University’s Public School of Health.
PPI-SA is active year-round in 35 primary schools across 7 areas in Durban (Umlazi, Wentworth, Umbumbulu, Chatsworth, Lamontville, Durban City and Molweni), with plans to extend the organization’s geographic presence and impact, with the INK area, Western Cape and Gauteng on the radar for calendar year 2013. PPI-SA also employs 40 young adults who serve as agents of change and older brothers and sisters for the children they coach. Twice a year, PPI-SA brings together all of its participants from these underprivileged communities to participate in a cross community education day where the emphasis is on more than winning, with the key objectives being social integration and fun.
Since the organization’s inception, PPI-SA has hosted the CityWide Tournament event twice a year and it’s a great way to wrap up the semester before schools go on break for Winter Holiday. This year, for the first time, PPI-SA will be offering HIV/AIDS Voluntary Counseling and Testing services at the May 26th Tournament free of charge, through PPI-SA partner, Zo-Life, at the CityWide Tournament. Trained and certified Zo-Life counselors will be on site in mobile clinics offering testing for all interested individuals, including participants, coaches, school representatives and members of the greater Durban community. Please join PPI-SA staff and over 1,000 of our future stars as we continue to bring value added life skills to children, so that they too, can be inspired and given hope.
