A farmer in India commits suicide every 41 minutes. You can make a difference. We plan to repair canal in Pathari village of Vidarbha, Maharashtra, India, that connects to reservoir in coming months which will allow village of 1300 people harvest second crop, create small business opportunities for youth of the village and help about 400+ livestock in the village.
A farmer in India commits suicide every 41 minutes (source: http://ncrb.gov.in which publishes these stats by occupation, state, district etc. ) Though there are multiple reasons for that, in Maharashtra (state with highest suicide levels for last 20 years), farmers rely on monsoon rain for harvesting crops. Youth of the village are not able to start diary based business due to lack of water conservation. The canal that connects to the reservoir needs repairs.
The canal as well as reservoir is in desperate need of removing silt. Repairing the reservoir and canal will allow it to collect rain water and transfer it to the fields for irrigation. Farmers in Pathari village will be able to cultivate a second crop like vegetables besides cotton. 170+ acres of agricultural land will get much needed water to grow vegetables, raise cattle for diary based businesses. It will increase the water table of the reservoir by about estimated 25%.
We hope that the opportunities created in the village will allow around 1300 farmers to harvest second crop, put food on the table, raise 400+ livestock and start diary business- eventually driving the number of suicides among young farmers down. Also, the exodus from villages towards urban India will slow down in this part of the country, if this model is successful. We have already raised $5000 so far and need $17000 more to reach our goal. Please see the detailed budget attached here.
