Sumatra Rainforest Institute has continued its field activities and has been involved in recruitment and consolidation with community members living near Dolok sibual Buali Nature reserve, one of the Batang Toru ecosystem forests.

There has recently been great progress here made at our 'Camp Station' huts. The 2 huts consist of four rooms for sleeping and one for meetings, there is a simple cooking area and natural river 10 minutes walk.
These huts which are located approximately 50m outside the nature reserve have a multi function purpose.
One function is to support Community Forest Patrol where local members have been trained in monitoring and collecting data about Orangutan behaviour and population as well as protecting the border from poaching or logging. The SRI team have commenced creating and maintaining the trackline in which the patrol will use, which will reach three kilometres either way from 'Camp Station' . Thus far the team have established a 500 metre trackline with efforts to continue next month. This path has a purpose of ensuring ease of the Patrol members and also conveying that there is constant activity in this area to potential poachers and loggers.

The other function of these simple huts is to facilitate any local or international researchers or interns that have a keen interest in studying Wildlife behaviour and Forest conservation. The forest is home to many animals including Orangutan, Gibbon, Bird and reptile species.

The team has also started a plant nursery at 'Camp station' including native tree species and coffee seedlings. This initiative in time hopes to bring a profit  and in turn self sustain this project and pay for the maintinence of the huts, forest tracks and wage for local patrol members.

These steps forward and progress towards the protection of the Orangutans and other wildlife in this forest would not be possible without the kind financial donations from people like  yourself.
A little goes a long way and can make a big difference here in Sumatra.

From the SRI team on the ground,
Thankyou!
