This last month Sumatra Rainforest Institute has continued field trips to Dolok Sipirok, one of the Batang Toru ecosystem forests where construction of our huts and base camp has made great progress.
The modest huts are now erect and the team have given them their first test run by spending time using the facilities and seeing first hand what works and what needs to be improved. They have reported lovely cool nights of 18' with a calming warm breeze and are enjoying a pleasant 10 minute walk from base camp to a clean refreshing river for leisurely swimmming and bathing. As well as giving this base camp a test run the team are planting coffee and avocado trees with plans to add durian next month!
This space has the purpose for important monitoring of current orangutan population, to assess any illegal activities taking place and for researchers and students to study this species and forest habitat.
It provides a safe, simple base to acrew more accurate valueble information for a species that has a mere 40-70 individuals left in and around these nature reserves.
Without the generous suppost and financial donations towards this project these crucial facilities would not be possible.
From the team on the ground,
Thankyou
