Challenge

In the wake of COVID 19, pandemic health professionals and leaders globally are advocating for preventive measures such as proper handwashing, social-distancing, and self-quarantine. But how often do these messages filter down to the grassroots level? This is where Community Health Volunteers play a vital role.CHVs offer the first line of defense during disease outbreaks: they are often the first point of contact between communities - especially rural ones and urban informal settlements

Solution

As trusted members of their communities, CHVs can complement mainstream sources of information such as mass media in a more personal way, having an intimate understanding of the contexts they operate in. They are key to ensuring that families stay healthy, and are an important resource that can be deployed to monitor the health of communities and relay consequential information to the formal healthcare system. This will ensure there is increased surveillance and awareness-raising on COVID 19.

Long-Term Impact

CHVs will contribute to community participation and increased access to and utilization of public health services through community mobilization and education. CHVs will be involved in the provision of different disease treatments at the community level, along with psychological counseling and therapy services. The volunteers will play a substantial role in the provision of immunization and the distribution of drugs. They will visit the homes of residents and provided care for newborns,
