We provide books to deprived school children promote Reading and social/ ethical values in an environment where behavioral role models are lacking. Many children in the rural areas have restricted access to books. Hardly does one find a child that has a book to call its own. Even among educated Kenyans the habit of book reading barely exists so gaining knowledge after education ceases. Acquiring the reading habit will encourage these children to continue educating themselves after schooling.
The project derives from the recognition that many children in the rural and urban areas have restricted access to books. Hardly does one find a child that has a book to call its own. Even among educated Kenyans the habit of book reading barely exists so gaining knowledge after education ceases. They lack inspirational content and it is part of the project's aims to extend the list of available books to include titles which promote ethical values and to instil a wider interest in literature.
Pata Kitabu Foundation will provide books to 8000 deprived school going children in rural Kenya and to promote reading culture as well as social & ethical values in an environment where behavioral role models are lacking. So as to change their mind-set that high moral values are appreciated as a way to success in life. These children live in communities where good role models are few or non-existent. Regrettably, greed, dishonesty and selfishness are more often perceived as means of achievement!
Acquiring the reading habit will encourage these children to continue educating themselves after schooling. The books provided include titles which promote ethical values and to instill values and expose them to a wider interest in literature. Books will help instill values important to their future as useful members of society.
