On Friday, October 5, the entire 8th grade class at O'Brien took field trips to local efficiency and renewable energy projects. These field trips included touring Patagonia's LEED Certified warehouse and distribution center, Washoe County Air Quality Management Division's air quality testing station, Sunvelope Solar's solar hot water manufacturing facility, and the Desert Research Institute's zero-net energy REEF building. Additionally, 3 local energy professionals came into the classroom to share their experiences with the students. These presenters were Craig Chinery, Energy Efficiency Manager for the Nevada Department of Corrections, Peter Millar, Energy Management Specialist with UNR's Business Environmental Program, and David Gibson, Community Services Director with Envirolution. The students had fantastic experiences in each of these, and learned how efficiency or renewable energy can become a career path, in addition to saving money for their homes or school.
