Grandmothers in a Granny Group
Grandmothers in a Granny Group

Nyaka grandmothers give everything they have so their grandchildren can have a better life.

Grandmothers like Honest work hard in the fields under the hot sun through the pain of arthritis and old age to make sure their grandchildren have enough to eat.

Before joining Nyaka, Honest had a small shop, but could not grow enough or buy enough supplies to sell. Because her small business was not growing, Honest could not afford basic needs or school fees for her grandchildren.

When Honest and other grandmothers created a Nyaka Granny Group in their region, your support helped her dramatically change her family’s life. Because of your support, Honest received a micro-loan that allowed her to grow her business.

Because you empowered Honest through business training, people now come from all over the region to shop at her store! You have allowed her the opportunity to send her grandchildren to school!

As you watch her story with the link below, know that this is one of the 7,000+ happy endings you have helped write. Thank you for supporting women like Honest so she can better other children’ worlds.

Because of your kindness, Mukaka (Granny) Lols is able to send her five orphaned grandchildren to school! Nine years ago, Lols’ five grandchildren lost their parents to AIDS. They were left to fend for themselves. Lols was determined to make sure her grandchildren were cared for, even if that meant she’d now be a full-time caretaker in her 70’s. Though Lols loved her grandchildren, she struggled to provide food and school fees for the kids. Her grandchildren were physically chased away from school because they were too poor to pay. Lols had been able to make and sell crafts to make money in the past. Yet, recently, Lols’ eyesight was damaged, which prevented her from working. Lols was devastated that she couldn’t financially provide for her grandchildren. She felt like she had failed them. However, thanks to your support, everything changed for Lols’s family! Five years ago, Nyaka’s Grandmother Program started a Granny Group in Lols’ area. To ensure that the grandmothers can financially provide for their grandchildren, Nyaka encourages each group to have an income generating project. Lols’ group’s project was creating crafts. At first, Lols was devestastated. She thought she wouldn’t be able to contribute to the crafts, because of her poor eyesight. Your generosity changed her life. Because of you, Nyaka was able to buy Lols glasses! With the new glasses you provided Lols, she could now create enough crafts to send her children to school! With the tailoring classes and sewing machine she received through the Granny Group, Lols is now one of the top tailors in the region. Hospitals hire Lols to create their uniforms. She also sells her crafts at the largest markets in the region. Because of the economic opportunity you provide Lols, you have ensured a better future for her grandchildren! Thank you for empowering Lols! If you want to continue supporting her and other grandmothers, check out their crafts for sale at Nyaka’s Etsy shop!

Because of your compassion, Fatuma can care for all seven of her grandchildren.

At age 53, Fatuma was thrown back into a full-time caretaker role for her grandchildren. Though Fatuma owned a shop, she couldn't afford to stock her inventory. Because her business was struggling, she couldn't pay the school fees for her grandchildren.

Fatuma was devastated that she couldn’t fully support her grandchildren. But other than her husband, she had no support.

Yet, Fatuma and her family’s lives dramatically changed when she joined one of your Nyaka Granny Groups! The donations you gave, gurned into micro-loans for grandmothers like Fatuma. With herloan, Fatuma can now ensure that her shelves are always full.

Because you’ve provided Fatuma with the tools needed to run a stable business, she can now pay ALL of her grandkids’ school fees!

You also connected Fatuma to other grandmothers just like her! Together, they were able to create a community of support. These grandmothers really prove that more heads are better than one! They also exchange tips on child raising and on building businesses!

YOU gave Fatuma the tools she needed to change her life. Thank you!

Veneranda in front of her kiln of bricks

Veneranda is a 60 year-old grandmother who is raising three grandchildren between the ages of 3 and 10. She does her best to provide for her family but she’s never had enough money to grow her business. She just needed someone to believe in her. That someone was you!

You gave Veneranda the opportunity to grow her bricklaying business! With the loan she received, she was able to build and sell two large kilns of bricks. She was able to repay the loan in full and even started a second business with the remaining profits. Her second business is party decorating, which is something she has always wanted to do but never thought would be possible.

Thanks to you, Veneranda now runs her two businesses of bricklaying and party decorating. She is also able to better care for her three grandchildren. Thank you for changing the lives of grandmothers like Veneranda!

Thank you for supporting your grandmothers in Uganda!

You have given 7,301 women opportunities and resources that they otherwise wouldn’t have. So far this year, over 100 grandmother homes have been visited by the Nyaka Grandmother Team to check on the well-being of your grandmothers. The team ensures safe living conditions in the home, makes sure the grandmothers have a healthy kitchen vegetable garden, sees that all of the grandchildren in the home are going to school, and offers advice and other support as needed.

Grandmother Groups have also recently gathered to learn more about income generating projects, food security, the importance of education, and health and sanitation improvement. Two of the groups even had the opportunity for exchange visits to learn more about income generating activities. During the visits, the grandmothers were taught how to grow mushrooms. Your grandmothers can now grow mushrooms for their own meals and can also grow enough to sell and make a profit. Your donations make opportunities like this possible. Thank you!
