After creating a model home for street children in Birgunj, we decided it's time to help more children living on the streets of Nepal and open another home in Butwal, western Nepal where there are around 300 children as young as 3-4 years old with no home to go to. There are no other organizations in that area helping street children. The home will provide shelter, education, care and skills training to the children to equip them for a successful future.
There are around 300 children living in and around Butwal, western Nepal. A needs assessment conducted by Our Sansar in 2016 revealed that there are no NGOs or governmental agencies working with street children in the area. After consultations with the authorities and other organizations, we were requested to open a transit home and to assist street children in the area. The local government do not have the capacity, resources or qualified personnel to implement such a project directly.
Our Sansar will fill this gap in service provision for street children by opening a shelter home that offers education, care and a re-uniting service with the children's families wherever possible. We will also support families of street children to enable them to return to their families and communities. We plan to help approximately 50 children and 25 families a year.
We envision Butwal free of street children and all the children living back with their families and fulfilling their dreams. Where linking with the families is not possible, we will prepare the children for an independent future and they will be provided with a loving home before they are adults and ready to live happy lives on their own.
