Nepal disaster:relief to remote rural villages

by Child Rescue Nepal

We were the first NGO to start delivering aid in Makwanpur,Nepal where we have a base and were able to purchase supplies and deliver them with the support of the police (for protection),the army (for transport) and local people who contributed food, blankets etc. There are still very remote villages that no one has yet reached and people are hungry. Please help us reach them. Once we have met basic needs we will start building homes so people can stay dry when the Moonsoon rains come in June.

Makwanpur is close to the earthquake epicentre, (about 70 miles away), but is not the focus of aid. Many homes have been destroyed and people are hungry. Most aid agencies being dependent on vehicles cannot reach into the high hills where only narrow paths exist. The government relief office coordinates aid but has no direct supplies . We only work in villages which have had no relief or other agency is helping.

We aim to keep people alive in villages so they can begin to rebuild their own homes and secure some protection before the monsoon arrives in June. Then we will begin to rebuild schools so children can return to school.

Long-Term Impact

We work to reduce child trafficking in areas near the Indian border. In most villages, over the last 10 years we have returned children home who as been rescued from India. If we restore homes & schools children are less likely to be sold again as they are safe in school and families will not move into cities. There are already reports of traffickers taking advantage of the chaos and the desperation of poor people anxious to offer their children the dream that traffickers peddle of a new life.
