Students of the Lycee Modern de ‘Amitie (combined middle/secondary school for girls in northern Burkina Faso) are amazing! Last year, 82% of the middle school students passed the national exit exam compared with 59% of students nationally; and 84% of the secondary school students passed the national exit exam compared with 37% of students nationally. Students remark that a hot noon meal (of rice, beans or macaroni) is a major factor in their being able to concentrate and excel.
Most of these 685 students come from distant villages. At their young age, they have to find families to live with or live with classmates (often in precarious situations) in a town 3 kms from their school. Because the students have very limited resources to sustain their daily needs, including food, the school maintains a canteen offering them a hot noon meal when they are in school. It is the educational environment, in particular a hot noon meal, plus high educational standards that allows these girls from indigent village families to succeed.
Students entering middle school this year want to share with our GlobalGiving partners that their coursework includes: French, English, math, biology, life science and earth science, history and geography, and physical education.
The canteen serving students of this school relies entirely upon donations in order to provide simple meals to students. Please help us support a noon meal for students, clearly an essential factor in the educational success of village girls from indigent families who hold great potential and great desire to achieve a productive education and future.
Our sincere gratitude for your hand up to these outstanding young women (future teachers, health workers and leaders in Burkina Faso)!
