Instruments are arriving at the office
Dear Tipitina’s Foundation Supporters,
As we close out 2011, I want to thank you for your help in meeting our goal through the Instrument A Comin’ (IAC) project on GlobalGiving. I am happy to announce that we have added three new schools to the list of over 70 schools that we are currently supporting throughout the Greater New Orleans region. (http://g.co/maps/9n4at)
- Einstein Charter School (K-8th)
- Edward Hynes Charter School (K-8th)
- Pierre A. Capdau (K-8th)
To tell you a little about these schools; Einstein Charter School has expanded their music program to include a full jazz band. Edward Hynes has over half of their students enrolled in their music program and plans to increase participation after moving onto their post-Katrina newly rebuilt campus. P.A. Capdau will have an expanded marching band and a full battery drum line for the first time. Luckily, we will be able to get the instruments in the hands of the young musicians before the Mardi Gras parades begin to roll.
As you already know, this year our Foundation was able to support Sheriff Newell Norman’s Band of Excellence (BOE), an after-school program that draws students from high schools across the Greater New Orleans region. The BOE program provides music education in history, theory, instrumental instruction and ensemble performance. We recently attended the BOE Holiday Bash at the Westwego Performing Arts Theatre, where we heard this amazing marching band play on their new instruments (see picture atteched). When I first came in contact with BOE they had one sousaphone that was shared amongst multipe kids. They now have seven which allows more kids to participate in the marching bands and concerts.
Additionally, by partnering with the Wonderful World Jazz Foundation in Japan, we were able to reciprocate the generosity shown to us following Hurricane Katrina by outfitting two youth jazz bands in the Miyagi Prefecture of Japan. The Swing Dolphins in Kesennuma and the Bright Kids in Tagajo received numerous instruments to replace those lost during last spring’s earthquake and tsumani.
With your help, this year alone we have purchased over 100 instruments. Our last shipment to our three new schools will be delivered to all of the schools during the month of January. In the days ahead, I look forward to sharing with you pictures of our kids with instruments in hand.
Through your GlobalGiving donations and donations from across the world, we are truly touching hearts and supporting our young musicians. Please know that I appreciate your support and thank you for sharing in the process.
With warmest regards,
