This project will focus on access to safe water and affordable sanitation facilities in Mtambani and Kiharaka Primary Schools having a population of 3507 pupils where 2511 pupils from Mtambani Primary School (1,260 boys, 1,251 girls) and 996 pupils from Kiharaka Primary School (499 boys and 497 girls). Water and Sanitation facilities will be constructed in two primary schools.
Bagamoyo District is facing huge setbacks on proper sanitation facilities in primary schools which have resulted to increased diseases like diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid and school absenteeism for girls during menstrual periods. Bagamoyo district has a total of 14 primary schools with 13,455 pupils (6,785 boys, 6670 girls) which face severe latrine shortages.
This project will address the problem by constructing water and sanitation infrastructures in two schools of mtambani and kiharaka ( 4 toilets for school pupils and two toilets for teachers in each school),training of pupils on improved hygiene and sanitation, production of re-usable sanitary pads for girls, formation of school health clubs and construction of rainwater harvest systems.
Access to clean and safe water for hand wash will increase pupils Confidence in maintaining their hygiene. Children with disabilities will have access to latrines which are equipped with devices that support them. Community members will gain skills in constructing simple and affordable latrines for homes
