...or reading activities to reach struggling readers whose residence are far from school.
San Jose Elementary School in Donsol designs this program to reach struggling pupils whose residences are far from the school. The teachers together with the pupil leaders and volunteers conduct one-on-one reading remediation and story reading at the pupil’s home. They bring reading materials and story books from their reading center and light snacks which the school provides for the pupils.
It is conducted every Saturday and Sunday from 7am-1pm. They call it Balsa-basa, when the house of the pupil to be visited will be reached through a balsa or raft; Banka-araman, when it is reached through a boat; and Walk for Knowledge, if they will journey a long walk to reach the house of the children.
There were five recipient pupils in Balsa-Balsa and Banka-araman, and eight in Walk for Knowledge. The parents of the pupils were happy of the remedial reading because they witness how their children progress in reading. They also appreciate that the school takes effort to visit them, though their residence is very far from school.
The school provides for the snacks and lunch of pupil and teacher volunteers of the program during the outreach activity.
