On June 8, two medical students from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, under our supervision, will depart for Kisiizi Hospital, Uganda, where they will deliver hundreds of new bed nets to the hospital and monitor the progress of this project. We need 1800 bed nets to protect the staff of 300 of the hospital since each staff member has an average of six members to their family. After this goal has been accomplished we need additional thousands of bed nets to provide to the patients who are served by the hospital estimated to be 150,000 to 200,000.
Of note is the fact that the hospital, under the medical supervision of Dr. Tonny Tumwesigye, is negotiating with the Peace Corps to have a Peace Corps Volunteer assigned for two years to the hospital to assist with health education including "on the ground" monitoring of the bed net project. Dr. Tonny, as he is called, received an award in 2010 from the President of Uganda, Mr. Museveni, for being one of the 12 Best Health Care Provider Leaders in the country.
