Mon Valley Circles - Circles Out Of Poverty

by Mon Valley Circles inc

Summary

Mon Valley Circles, Inc's mission is to serve impoverished individuals and families in the Mon Valley region of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by assisting them in gaining self-sufficiency. As our name implies, the core of Mon Valley services is the circle. Circle Leaders (of lower income) are matched with 2-3 Circle Allies (of middle or upper income). Allies provide emotional and relational support to Leaders as they seek to make their transition to self-sufficiency.

Challenge

The cycle of poverty can be pernicious. Obstacles from many directions often converge to make poverty's exit feel impossible to those taking those first steps to overcome it. We see this reflected in the Mon Valley in Pennsylvania. Current economic realities created by past and present events mean that many of the Mon Valley's residents are living in poverty. In fact, 1 in 3 residents of the Mon Valley live at or below the poverty line.

Solution

The core of our program is the circle. A Circle Leader (of lower income) is matched with 2 or 3 Circles Allies of middle or upper income. Circle Groups consist of 10-15 Circle Leaders and their Allies; the group convenes weekly to explore their individual plans; they are provided with dinner, childcare and children's programs. Groups also allow Leaders to connect with each other to offer support, understanding and a listening ear as they seek to meet self-determined goals.

Long-Term Impact

Circles does not emphasize alleviating the symptoms of poverty, but rather facilitating self-sufficiency and eradicating poverty in the lives of the people we serve. The program seeks to assist individuals and families in: (1) increasing household income and sustaining 200% or more of the federal poverty line for at least two years; (2) increasing household assets; and (3) reducing dependence on entitlements.
