This project will support a Mobile Medical Van Unit (MMV Unit) enabled with the capacity to fabricate custom protective footwear for persons suffering from leprosy related disability and deformity of the feet, living in remote, rural and vulnerable parts of the country.
There are more than 1000 people suffering from leprosy related deformity living in rural and remote parts of North East of India.Persons suffering from leprosy related deformity and disability of the feet are especially vulnerable. This is because not only are their mobility and dignity compromised but they often lose their source of livelihood and pushed further into poverty and vulnerability.Custom protective MCR footwear which is the primary treatment, is inaccessible to most of them.
This project provides customized protective MCR footwear at the doorstep of persons suffering from leprosy related deformity or disability in remote and rural parts of India. The Mobile Medical Van Unit is equipped with a physio technician and shoe technician and a driver who in addition to fabricating custom footwear , will also support patients with physiotherapy, conduct local health camps and refer sever cases to regional public medical centers.
This project will provide custom protective MCR footwear to 500 persons suffering from leprosy related disability in some of the poorest regions of North East India. This solution, not only provides mobility and dignity to persons suffering from this challenge, but also enables them to continue earning a livelihood, engaging in their communities and living full lives. Finally, this solution overcomes the challenge of 'dropping out' during the leprosy treatment cycle.
