Hello! Thus far, we have raised $185 through GlobalGiving towards our goal of $4,000 to assist with in-country transportation and really need your help. Mfangano Island has roughly 18,000 residents, depending on the time of year and is separated by a giant mountain in the middle. On the half of the island where our bike shop is located, there are 200 motorbikes and 1 car. The team at the shop has sold through 700 bikes we have sent. We are about to ship 350 bikes on 6/30/14.
We have found 2 nice road bikes to send across for the new racers I mentioned in my last update. The boys will be getting road shoes, cycling kits, and nice, gently used Pinarello road bikes.
Bicycles for Humanity Colorado puts 100% of the funds we raise back into the cause. We have no overhead from paid staff as we all volunteer our time.
Best,
Mike Lover

Can you image how life has changed? I traveled to the shop on January 16th and did a ride around the entire island (over 50k) to see what we can learn about the impact bikes are having. My guides on the bike ride were two locals (see photo) and my travel partner Becca Blay. The two boys on the ride had done a 150K road race in Kenya a few months before my arrival. They told me that it was their first race and they finished 9 and 11 out of 300 racers. Now here is the kicker...they boys race the road riders on their mountain bikes!!! Can you imagine? I'm having visions of John Candy except we may have picked the right country and the right sport...the best runners in the world come from Kenya...why not the best cyclist.

Bikes are everywhere! From the bike shop..."I can’t forget to mention the rate at which the rides have increased in the island as now every man and women can ride the bikes including 3 years old kids. This is a big impact to this remote island in terms of transport is concerned. " I'll be traveling to the shop on January 16th and look forward to sharing photos in our next report. We are going to make an attempt to ride around the entire island (over 50k) to see what we can learn about the impact bikes are having.
