In Chile, two out of three people (66% of the population) - https://www.ipsos.com/es-cl - indicate mental health as the main health problem. Sixty-six percent of parents and/or caregivers of children with childhood cancer present mental health disorders. Faced with this crisis, Fundacion Nuestros Hijos has launched the "Psychosocial Care Program for Main Caregivers of Children and Adolescents with Cancer".
Caregivers of children with cancer experience similar processes to them, with an increase in the rates of mental health pathologies after diagnosis, with depression and adjustment disorders being the most common. Mothers, in particular, face an increased risk of mental health problems due to the high burden of care and physical and emotional exhaustion.
The "Psychosocial Care Program for Primary Caregivers of Children and Adolescents with Cancer", addresses the urgent need for psychological and psychiatric support for the main caregivers of the institution's beneficiaries.
