5 years on from the disaster, the challenge for rebirth from nothing has just begun in Fukushima, affected not only by earthquake but also by the nuclear accident. Soon after the disaster, Doctors of the World Japan launched a mental healthcare program with local aid group in the affected area where no psychiatric assistance was available. Our medical volunteers provide a seamless continuum care including counseling services, school counseling and mother-child mental healthcare.
March 11 2011, huge earthquake and tsunami hit Eastern Japan and it triggered nuclear accident at fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant. 5 years on from the disaster, the recovery and reconstruction process varies by locality in Fukushima. As the Impact of the disaster on the people get varied and more and more complicated, the mental health care supports must be must be meticulous to satisfy various different needs.
Doctors of the World continues the partnership with the local partner association by dispatching various medical experts in order to ensure the provision of mental health care service in this area where no psychiatric assistance was available after the disaster. Our activities are as follows; 1.Dispatch of psychiatrists to the mental clinic 2.Dispatch of nurses and clinical psychologists to the cimmunity meeting and home visiting activities 3.Dispatch of psychologists for school counseling
The supporting areas are seriously affected by complex disasters of the 2011 earthquake and nuclear plant accident, and its recovery and reconstruction process varies by locality. Increase of elderly single population, harsh living conditions of the disabled, widespread alcohol dependency, separated families, and a number of pre-quake issues that remain unsolved to this date. We continue our activities providing mental healthcare in Fukushima as long as there are needs of our support.
