Strengthening European Leadership & Demanding Vaccine Equity

By Anna Peiris | UAEM Europe Executive Director

Things at UAEM Europe have been rather busy the past few months as we onboarded our new Executive Director and committee members, re-focused our attention on in-person chapters activities, all the while continuing the fight for global COVID vaccine equity.

Over the summer months, European countries proceeded with the gradual removal of restrictions on in-person meetings, with UAEM members witnessing campuses' preparing to open-up to students once again. This change has allowed numerous meetings to take place between members, granting chapters to re-energise and start planning their advocacy for the upcoming academic year. One critical meeting was the strategy discussion by the European Coordinating Committee (ECC) in September. This is the first time the committee has held a physical meeting since the start of the pandemic, and provided a crucial opportunity for the ECC to establish an intricate work plan for 2021/22, focusing on ETAF implementation for chapters and European high-level advocacy. As we welcomed a new Executive Director, alongside newly appointed committee members, UAEM Europe also held a virtual annual European Leadership Meeting at the start of October between all our organisation's leadership bodies. These discussions allowed us to strengthen relationships in leadership, review our advocacy plans for the upcoming year as well as reflect on incorporating diverse, equitable & inclusive values in our core activities & structures.

On an advocacy front, following on from the ETAF Explained webinar series in the first half of 2021, UAEM Europe was delighted to publish our recent advocacy resource, the ETAF Handbook. This is a critical tool for all chapters across Europe which provides members with a step-by-step guide as to how they can advocate for implementation at their universities. As chapters continue to engage their universities on this issue, we aim to see more universities publicly adopt the frame, using the resources developed by UAEM Europe.

Whilst these changes were taking place within the region, UAEM continued to witness the growing COVID vaccine inequity, with UAEM members carrying on with high-level advocacy and demanding countries within Europe voice their support for the TRIPS Waiver. As part of this, UAEM participated in the Days of Shame protests to highlight Europe’s critical role in the imbalance of vaccine distribution across the world. This included UAEM UK who, along with allies, led a funeral procession highlighting the 3.7 millions lives lost to COVID-19, whilst the UK government continued to block the waiver. During November, chapters across the region coordinated actions as part of UAEM’s Access to Medicines week, raising support for the waiver and pressuring key stakeholders to play their role in establishing global vaccine equity.

As we continue to see the everyday importance of fighting access to medicines challenges across the globe, UAEM Europe looks forward to a successful academic year ahead! We are grateful for your donations and continued support for our cause.
