UAEM Europe is part of the global Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) movement of university students organizing on their campuses and beyond to ensure that publicly funded medicines and medical innovations are affordable and accessible to the public. UAEM Europe works to empower student-volunteers at over 40 university chapters across 10 countries to address the issue of access to life-saving medicines through advocating for fair and equitable licensing principles.
Millions of euros are invested into biomedical research at European universities and public research institutions each year, with close to 700 million euros of European public funds already pledged to COVID-19 research. Despite the public health system in most European countries, life-saving medicines bear exorbitant prices, posing a huge access challenge which strongly impacts the lives of those who need them the most.
Universities play a crucial role in biomedical research and drug innovation and students are in a unique position to engage with their universities to push for health justice and equity. UAEM Europe empowers a generation of young people on campus to hold their institutions accountable to their social responsibility and to improve their knowledge stewardship through socially responsible licensing frameworks.
UAEM believes that universities and publicly funded research institutions can and must be part of the solution to the access to medicines crisis by promoting medical innovation in the public interest and ensuring that all people, regardless of income, have access to essential medicines and other health-related technologies. Universities have a key opportunity to safeguard publicly-funded innovations, ensuring they are adequately priced and distributed in a socially-responsible manner.
