Medicine for HIV+ Children in Uganda

by American Foundation for Children with AIDS

The words from a parent can be so powerful.  Annet's mother shares their story ...

"My daughter’s life depends on drugs. Annet started in the clinic in 2007.  She was diagnosed of cancer in 2008 and was started on anti-cancer drugs.  Ever since starting the drugs, she has been greatly improving and living a very normal life like any other children of her age.

Annet is in school and I greatly appreciate what Baylor has done for my daughter.  I decided to offer a service in return to other children while telling Annet's success story.  I want to enable other caretakers and tell them I have positive hope for their children.

Drugs are the only keys I have found for my daughter's life.  I make sure that the medication is taken as prescribed and instructed by the medical personnel.  Without medicines, I believe that my child would be dead right now.  As long as medication is there, my daughter will live to testify."

This mother is one of the most active community volunteers that we have, and she is doing it as a way of giving back to the clinic for the great work that they have done in her daughter’s life.  Your donation has made this possible.  Thank you for caring, and for improving lives.

A mother's story ...

"When I realized that my daughter was HIV positive, I thought it was the end of her life.  I never expected her to attain the age of 10 years.  Right now she looks good and healthy ever since she was enrolled in care.  I was counseled, my daughter was treated and now there is a very big improvement.  Before my daughter was enrolled in care, she was very thin; she had on and off fevers, diarrhea, a cough and general body weakness.  I'm very happy for the community volunteers and field officers who always visit me at home for routine counseling.  My daughter has a future because of Baylor-Uganda.  I thank God, and all the Baylor staff for the continuous support, care and treatment given to my daughter"

Sarah has been in our care for almost two years.  Her mother can see a future because of donors like yourself providing medicine for HIV+ children. You have made a difference and we thank you for your generosity.

Dear friends,

What an amazing year it has been for AFCA's children, thanks to YOU!  Because of YOU, thousands of children are thriving and hopeful.  Because of YOU, countless children are healthy and they have returned to school.  Because of YOU, hundreds of children had good food to eat this year.  And because of you, children like Maria not only eat well, but also go to school, dreaming of a future free of poverty. We don't have enough words to thank you for what you've done because it is is life changing.

Thank you for caring for the little ones we serve and for giving them a brighter future.  You are the ones who allow us to keep working for them, providing them with medicine, medical supplies, clean water, food, school fees and supplies, livestock, seeds, self-reliance and HOPE.

As you make your end of the year giving decisions, please keep us in mind so we can continue helping children in 2015 and beyond.

We wish you the best year ever, full of every blessing and happiness imaginable, knowing you are a hope-giver.  If you'd like to learn even more about what we do or how you can meet some of the children you have helped, please contact me at  I'd love to chat with you!

On behalf of the children,

Emanuel was 11 years old when he lost his mother, and went to live with his stepmother.  Family members were not aware of Emanuel's HIV status when he arrived.  Baylor visited the home and encouraged the entire famly to seek HIV counseling and testing.  Emanuel's father refused testing for the family.  However, the family was now aware of the boy's condition and offered him support.

It's now five years later and Emanuel is being raised by his older sister.  She has been able to help him attend his clinic appointments.  Emanuel has been faithfully taking the medicine and continues to be a healthy young man.  He is thrilled to be feeling well enough to attend school, and reports tell us he is doing well!

Your support of medicine project is priceless to children like Emanual and the family who is caring for him.  They now have hope for his future.

Annet is a 10 year old girl who lives with both her parents in the village of Kirombe, Uganda.  This little one's mom and dad are both in care for HIV/AIDS, making it difficult for them to take care of their small family.  Annet has been receiving treatment since 2008 for HIV and cancer of the skin at Baylor-Uganda, one of AFCA's partners in Uganda.  Sadly, time and time again, Annet developed swelling all over her body and had to be admitted to Mulago Hospital several times for care.  The cancer swellings worsened in 2010 to the point that Annet stopped eating and talking.  Her small body was weak and her parents were financially and spiritually devastated, thinking they'd lose their daughter.  In addition, even though his family depended on him, her dad wasn't working on a continuous basis because his own body was fighting AIDS and he couldn't keep a job.

Annet survived with the ongoing access to medication and support provided by AFCA.  Her recovery has allowed her to attend school and she is currently in primary two, thanks to the support from donors.  Annet's story is one of success because of your generosity and we can't thank you enough.

Annet now has hope and you are part of her recovery and bright future!  Thank you for supporting children like Annet, as without you, we can't do what we do.
