Challenge

Chios Island faces a challenge: the diminishing numbers and production of mastic gumtrees due to the aging of the trees and significant losses from destructive fires in recent decades, while global demand is increasing. Also, Greece possesses the weakest and most fragmented system of Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation (AKIS) among all EU member states. To bridge the knowledge gap in Greece's AKIS system, it is crucial to upskill mastic growers in modern practices through a knowledge network.

Solution

24 new generation mastic growers will be trained to become trainers and train at least 300 producers on sustainable practices. This innovative approach will benefit approx. 6,000 individuals indirectly, establishing the 1st Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System (AKIS) network in Greece specifically for Chios PDO Mastic. The implementation of trainings in all 24 mastic villages will create local hubs, enhancing accessibility and fostering knowledge sharing among mastic growers in Chios.

Long-Term Impact

Experienced mastic growers will serve as trainers, sharing modern cultivation techniques with their community through workshops & demonstrations. This innovative approach empowers producers, fostering collaboration/knowledge sharing, promoting the adoption of sustainable practices in mastic gum production, and leading to economic growth. NANG was established in 2018 with the initiative and donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) within the framework of the Recharging the Youth program.
