We restore and certify mangrove ecosystems in vulnerable regions using ONCRA, a science-based, open certification platform. By measuring and verifying the carbon stored in mangroves, we enable communities in West and East Africa to access carbon markets, attract funding, and protect biodiversity. This project supports climate resilience, economic opportunity, and scalable nature-based solutions for long-term environmental impact.
Mangroves are vital for climate protection and coastal resilience, storing up to 50% of oceanic carbon and reducing storm damage. Yet over 35% have been lost due to development, logging, and climate change. In underserved regions like West and East Africa, mangroves are rapidly disappearing, and lack of access to funding and clear governance makes large-scale restoration difficult.
Climate Cleanup developed ONCRA, a transparent, science-based certification platform that measures carbon stored in mangrove ecosystems. After a successful pilot in Bonaire, we are expanding to certify three new projects in West and East Africa. Certification enables these projects to access voluntary carbon markets, attract funding, and support sustainable, community-led conservation.
Certifying mangrove restoration projects unlocks long-term funding, enabling nature-based climate solutions to scale. Local communities benefit from new economic opportunities, improved coastal protection, and healthier ecosystems. This approach creates a replicable, transparent model for climate resilience and biodiversity protection in vulnerable coastal regions worldwide.
