Make Entrepreneurship Accessible

by Street Entreprenerus

Summary

Our core mission is to expand access to entrepreneurship by focusing on inclusivity. Currently, 50% of our founders are black, 20% are Latino, and 52% are women. Addressing racial inequality in the start-up world is not only a matter of justice but also imperative for businesses. Our focus on recruiting individuals of all backgrounds means that our entrepreneurs are building teams that understand a variety of contexts and we have no doubt this will be directly correlated to their success.

Challenge

Too often, aspiring entrepreneurs from marginalized communities can't access the knowledge and capital they need to start a business. Subsequently, our society is inept at harnessing the talent of those with the most experience overcoming challenges with the best insight into the biggest problems facing our world. It systematically prevents those communities from building wealth at scale. We want to change that, so that anyone with grit and a great idea can build their own business.

Solution

This project will solve the cost associated with expanding Street Entrepreneur's program and ensuring free access for low-income participants. To attend our workshops, participants must pay a fee based on their income to cover the cost of the workshop space, curriculum, and learning materials. To continue serving the low-income communities in D.C. free of cost, we will invest the funding received from this project to provide scholarships for low-income participants.

Long-Term Impact

By providing marginalized communities with access to capital, business acumen, and connections to build successful businesses, we will increase jobs in the D.C. area and beyond, while creating jobs and solving problems in underserved communities. Long-term, we aim to change broader distributions of wealth by expanding pathways out of poverty.
