MADD Help Line - helping 3K drunk driving victims.

by Mothers Against Drunk Driving

Summary

Drunk driving kills 10,000 people in the United States each and every year and injures 290,000 more. The MADD Help Line helps those who are impacted by drunk and drugged driving crashes when they need it. We are there for those who have been injured in crashes, for the loved ones of those who have been killed, and for concerned citizens who want to help end the violent crime of drunk driving. We want to raise $13,535, the annual cost of running the Help Line on nights and weekends.

Challenge

Drunk driving kills 10,000 people in the United States each and every year and injures 290,000 more. But these aren't the only people impacted by drunk driving. Families are torn apart, friends lost, communities shaken. At this challenging time, people are asked to deal with legal systems, medical systems, and the press, all while dealing with their grief and anger. They need help in dealing with the grief and the pain and starting their healing journey.

Solution

Because sometimes questions come up, or grief hits, at 3 AM or on Christmas, the MADD Victim and Survivor Help Line at 1-877-MADD-HELP (877-623-3435) is always available. Trained Victim Advocates are on the other side of the phone to provide emotional support, refer to community resources, provide supportive literature to help them through their time, and most importantly put them in touch with a local Victim Advocate to help locally with advocacy in the criminal and civil justice systems.

Long-Term Impact

If someone doesn't have help when they need it after their victimization, they can withdraw and become clinically depressed. Conversely, those who get the help they need are never "healed" -- there is always a loss there -- but many become Victim Advocates themselves, helping others in their times of need. Others become powerful advocates for change, helping root out the causes of the violent crime of drunk driving and working for an end to it.
