Attendance at Ngunyumu Primary School in the Korogocho Slum in Nairobi, Kenya, fluctuates by 40% depending on whether or not the school has food for the day. The UN World Food Programme supplies the school with food twice a semester, however this is never enough. The money that we have raised will supply firewood for the vessel to cook the lunchs for around 800 students. This money will also pay the cooks salaries for the year. After fulfilling these immediate needs the excess money will be used to start a back up food fund. The food that the UN World Food Programme has provided will only last for one month and after that there will be several weeks before their next delivery. By starting a back up food fund we can ensure that there will be food even when the donated food runs out.
When spending time at the school recently we were able to talk to one of the cooks extensively about her job, and the obstacles she faces daily. She has been a cook at Ngunyumu Primary for 9 years and through out this time she has gone weeks and sometimes months with no salary. Even so, she is still there every day to cook for the kids. In order to make lunch for the whole school the cook uses three bags of maize, one back of peas, and one gallon of oil. This produces a mass amount of food, but the students still have to ration small portions so that there will be enough for everyone. However if we can guarantee that the students have at least some food everyday that is a huge improvement and will keep the attendance up!
With this money we have raised we have solved some of the immediate problems, but there are still ways the Ngunyumu Primary school environment could be improved. While we are a small organization, we have developed a solid relationship with this school based on trust. We are actively working with local community groups in the Korogocho slum in hopes to build our reputation there to have a positive effect on the way that the school and education is viewed in the slum. We are working very closely with the school staff and community to develop projects that enhance the school environment and benefit the Korogocho community as well!
