This school year we have placed well over 70 Lunch Buddy mentors with young students in 15 different North Clackamas elementary schools. These pairs spend lunch and lunch recess together first eating then playing outside, doing a craft project, reading or playing a quiet game.
One school principal recently said, "The students who are lucky enough to have a Lunch Buddy greatly benefit from the relationship they develop with a caring adult mentor. It is a joy to see the faces of our students light up when their Buddy arrives for lunch, often bringing with them a craft project or game to complete with their student. Some of these relationships last throughout the students' elementary school experience, and by the end of that journey, the Buddy is really more like family. Our students learn and grow from the guidance, patience and focused attention of these caring volunteers. We couldn't ask for better relationships, we would only ask for more volunteers, as we have a very long waiting list of students who are hoping to be partnered up soon!"
At this point in the year we are busy planning our end of the year celebration where Lunch Buddies say good bye for the summer or permanently if the student is moving on to middle school next Fall.
We are accepting applications for the 2013-2014 school year.
