Love for Loro is a year-long (2017) drive to put hard-rubber shoes on the feet of kids/teens in rural Uganda to protect them from parasites. Led by kids in Austin, TX, we have already raised $25K toward our goal, $35K, via bake sales, flower sales, lemonade stands, and more. That translates to over 1K pairs of shoes. But, we still need over 500 pairs! By giving, you'll personally provide shoes and menstrual care to kids/teens at Loro Primary School. Menstrual kits were delivered to Loro in June!
Like many schools in rural Uganda, Loro Primary serves the area in about a 6km radius. This means that many students must walk 5 miles a day or more. While some of the students have sandals, most go barefoot, and few have hard shoes. As a result, it's commonplace for folks to deal with parasites called jiggers, which burrow into their feet, and often must be cut out, stopping kids from attending school while these cuts heal. In addition, female students lack proper menstrual care.
Love for Loro will provide each student at Loro Primary with proper, protective footwear. We believe that these shoes will last up to three years, hopefully getting passed down to other students once they are outgrown, providing lasting care for these young people. In addition, the menstrual kits we provide allow female students continue to attend school when they would normally stay home.
This project will affect over 1500 students, some in multiple ways. We believe the shoes will impact the community over the next five years, and that the menstrual kits can be something we continue to provide in years to come. We believe the shoes and kits will allow students the chance to attend more school, and therefore that more of them will end up graduating from Loro Primary and going to college. The long term effect of this will be a better life for these kids, now and in the future.
