Increasing levels of violence, stress and unhappiness in schools is affecting student success. We are developing tools, training and activities for high-schools to create a safe, happy and inclusive school environment where students and teachers are encouraged to achieve their full potential. This program is being run initially in public schools in Switzerland where there is a need for improvements in inclusivity to reduce racism, discrimination, violence and the threat of extremism.
In 2021, UNICEF reported that 1 in 3 children in Swiss schools experiences violence. Another study by Pro Juventute showed that students and teachers are experiencing high levels of stress. Children in developed countries are not immune to the global increase in violence and threat of extremism. Spending most of their waking hours at schools, children everywhere need to feel safe and valued in order to achieve and lead positive, impactful lives.
Working around a common project over at least a year, this project will reduce violence, stress and unhappiness in teachers and children in Swiss Romande public schools by providing training, tools and activities to the whole school community including administrators and parents. The training will develop essential violence prevention and response skills, approaches to increasing inclusiveness and reducing discrimination and positive teaching methods and practices for 3000 students.
Providing students with the skills to live well with others from an early age will enable them to achieve their full potential, avoid the risks of extremism and violence and contribute positively to their community throughout their lives. Our objective is to achieve long-term, sustained peace through the transformation of the way we teach in schools.
