Project #21731

Nurture a love of learning in 500 Managua kids

by Asociacion Centro Cultural Batahola Norte

This project will help 500 kids in vulnerable urban areas of Managua develop their love for reading and capacity to become lifelong learners. Students receive educational and emotional support in spaces that promote learning, creativity and social commitment. Work with families and teachers strengthens their active involvement in the children's education. Key activities include financial help for studies, weekly tutoring, life skills training, access to books and youth-led service projects.

Studies have shown that at least 12 years of schooling are required to break the cycle of poverty. In areas like Batahola the average level of education is only 7 years. Local schools are overcrowded and lack basic equipment. Books are rarely found at home or in the classroom due to high cost. Families struggle to pay for school costs and to help with homework. Kids in public schools need comprehensive support in study-oriented spaces to become lifelong learners and reach their full potential.

The Batahola Center works with kids, their teachers and their family to strengthen the learning environment. The Center's Library loans textbooks, organizes homework help and teaches students good study habits that improve grades. Teachers get access to books for their classroom. Youth develop leadership by running the library, leading life skills workshops with peers, and promoting reading with younger children. Parents learn new ways to manage family budgets and make education a priority.

Long-Term Impact

Children who complete at least a high school education have vastly increased options for stable employment as adults. When basic education is combined with creativity, social sensibility and leadership skills, as well as family support, more youth are able to continue on to technical specializations and university. This project's investment in community-based educational networks for over 500 children each year will ensure that today's eager readers can become tomorrow's leaders.
